After years of running our own cross-border trade eCommerce business. We have developed our own methodology which should apply to most business who wants to get started.
01. Identify your products and target customers
What am I selling? Where should I get started?
When you get started. You should analysis what products are you going to sell. Are they craftsmanship or handmade products? Or white label/unbranded/generic products? Or even some well established branded products? You should also try to start with one or two countries in which most of your target customers located.
02. Choose an online marketplace(s) to sell
Think about the advantage and disadvantage of each marketplace first
There are many online marketplaces (For example, Amazon, eBay, Taobao, Etsy... etc) which you can sell your products in targeted markets. Try doing research on some of these marketplaces first and see which online marketplace(s) matches your products. Some sellers might criticized you have to paid high service fees, face keen competitions with each others and need to follow their own strict rules and policy in order to sell products under these marketplaces. But on the other hand, they provide you a quick and easy way to get your products sold in a short time with high website traffic and take care of online marketing. It is more or less the same as you enjoy the same benefit of lease a physical shop in a large shopping mall to sell your products.
03. Start building your own online store
And drive your customers into your store
We have already mentioned the disadvantage of selling products in online marketplace(s). Once you have get familiar with them. You should start putting resources on building your own online store. You can choose between different SaaS (Software as a Service) eCommerce platforms (For example, Shopify, Bigcommerce, Volusion, etc) or using open sources eCommerce software solutions (For example, Magento, Opencart, WooCommerce, etc). Again try doing research on some of these solutions first to see which fit your needs. We recommended if you do not have enough budget to hire web developers or system administrators to work for you, you should go for those SaaS solutions.
04. Go marketing
To keep up the momentum
Once you have launch your own online store. You should start spending some budgets on online advertising. Google AdWords, Yahoo Advertising and Bing Ads is the right place to start. You can also hire a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts and helps you to analyze and streamline your online store to increase page rankings. Other online marketing channels includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube also help your targeted customers to reach your online store effectively. We also recommended you can put resources on publishing email newsletters using MailChimp and encourage your subscribers to return your online store frequently for new products and promotions.
05. Continue to improves your products and services
To improve your customer experience
Last but not least, once your business grows bigger, you should think of ways to improve the workflow of your business and see you can handle the increasing orders and customer inquiries more efficiently. By using a customer journey map, it helps you to identify and tell you the whole story of customer's experience. After that, you can pinpoint the problem and see where it should be improved. For example. If customers usually complains about the shipping time of their orders. You should consider to use other express logistics services like DHL, Fedex or UPS instead of using local post office services. On the other hand, if customers complains about a long inquiry time or their inquiry did not address correctly and effectively.
